Happy Earth Day!
It’s Earth Day and I can’t help think this whole COVID-19 pandemic is the earth’s way of telling us to slow down and appreciate what we have. As stir crazy as we all are getting, I’m trying to remind myself of all the quality time spent with my husband, daughter and fur baby. It’s time spent that we won’t get back and time we may not have had together otherwise. It’s sad it took a virus that is destroying many lives to find this appreciation. But I am trying to stay positive in all of this and see the bright side. Because our earth is so precious and we can’t take life for granted, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite ways to be environmentally friendly in design. So do me a little favor and say thank you to our beautiful earth today, as she provides us with so many wonderful things and places!
Buy heirloom quality furniture. The less you have to buy in the future, the better. This is a great way to create less waste down the road.
Consider redoing existing furniture pieces with new finishes and fabrics to keep current. There is something special about redoing furniture that keeps it special and unique to you.
Use water-based paint as it is much lower in VOC emission than its counterparts.
Decorate with natural materials. Wool, rattan and cotton are great materials to avoid VOCs found in synthetics.
Donate old cabinets, appliances and lighting to charity. This keeps them out of the landfill and someone that really needs them can reuse them for their project.
